Baby & Child Care Volunteer

Volunteer at a Baby Safe Haven for abandoned and orphaned children in South Africa.

Baby and Child Care Program in South Africa (Ages 0–3)

Our Baby and Child Care Program in South Africa allows volunteers to work directly with babies and toddlers aged 0–3 in Gqeberha. This structured early childhood placement focuses on emotional security, developmental stimulation, and consistent daily care during the most important stage of life.

If you are looking for meaningful volunteer work with young children while experiencing South Africa’s Eastern Cape coastline, this program combines purpose, supervision, and travel in one experience.

Why Join This Baby & Child Care Program?

The first three years of life shape attachment and brain development. For this reason, the project follows structured routines, provides age-appropriate stimulation, and encourages positive interaction in a safe, supervised environment.

Limited funding and staffing create a real need for additional support. Volunteers assist trained caregivers and never replace local staff. We carefully screen all participants to maintain child safety and high standards.

Your Role as a Childcare Volunteer

You take on a practical, hands-on role. You may help with feeding and dressing, support early play and stimulation activities, maintain daily routines, and provide consistent encouragement. Experienced local staff supervise you at all times.

No formal qualification is required. However, volunteers must be 16+ and show independence, maturity, patience, and genuine care for young children.

Working with babies requires responsibility and emotional awareness. It is also deeply rewarding. You can combine this placement with one of our other Volunteer with Children programs.

Travel and Weekend Opportunities

During the week, you focus on childcare. On weekends, you explore the region.

From Gqeberha, you can travel along the Garden Route, visit Addo Elephant National Park, experience adventure activities at Bloukrans Bridge, or explore Cape Town. We offer a wide range of affordable tours & outings you can join.

This balance of structured childcare work and travel makes the program ideal for gap year participants seeking both impact and exploration.

You may also consider our Wildlife & Conservation Projects to combine your stay with another exciting project in the same area.

Why Volunteer in Port Elizabeth Instead of Cape Town?

Port Elizabeth offers a more personal and grounded volunteer experience. Unlike busy tourist cities, it gives you space to connect deeply with your project, live by the beach, and join a close-knit international community. You experience real South African life while still enjoying weekend trips to safari reserves and the Garden Route and you can always visit Cape Town during your stay with us.

Accommodation and Support

Volunteers stay in a beautiful and comfortable beachfront house in Gqeberha and share space with other international participants.

We provide all meals and arrange daily transport to and from the childcare centre. Throughout your stay, local coordinators offer ongoing supervision and support.

From arrival to departure, we maintain a structured, safe, and professionally managed environment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this an Orphanage Volunteer Program?

No. This is not an orphanage, and the Baby and Childcare Volunteer Program supports registered child protection. The focus is structured care, development, and community support — not long-term institutional care with the children’s future focused on adoption.

Is the Baby and Childcare Volunteer Program ethical?

Yes. Volunteers assist an established local organisation and do not replace trained staff and add value by offering extra hands much needed due to financial challenges. There simply is not enough money to employ enough staff and volunteers are of great help. Activities are supervised and all volunteers will be screened and required to provide a Police Clearance Certificate.

Will I be alone at this project?

As we can’t guarantee that there will be other volunteers all the time at the project, you will however share the Volunteer House with other interns and volunteers who go to similar programs, so you will not be alone here, and all the fun activities and travel can be shared with other young travellers from all over the world.

Is this suitable for a gap year in South Africa?

Yes. This program combines meaningful childcare experience with beachfront living and an international volunteer community doing all the fun stuff together, making it ideal for younger gap year participants.
