African Penguin Volunteer Program in Gqeberha

The African Penguin Volunteer Program offers the opportunity to work directly with endangered African Penguins in Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth), South Africa. As part of this African Penguin Volunteer Program, you assist SANCCOB with the rescue, rehabilitation, and release of injured marine birds along the coastline.

Unlike a general wildlife placement, this program focuses specifically on marine bird conservation. Therefore, you gain hands-on experience in seabird care while contributing to the protection of a critically threatened species.

How Does the African Penguin Volunteer Program Work?

Volunteers typically work five days per week, including some weekends. Shifts run from 8:00 to 17:00 with breaks during the day.

You must be physically fit, reliable, and comfortable working outdoors in all weather conditions. In addition, an up-to-date tetanus vaccination is required.

The birds are wild animals. Therefore, all interaction is structured and supervised to prioritise animal welfare.

Accommodation and Support
